Juris Buņķis, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Juris was born in 1949 in Lubeck, Germany to Jadviga and Janis Bunkis (currently retired and living in Trenton, ON).   The family left the Latvian Refugee Camp and relocated to Canada in 1951.   Juris grew up in the Northern Ontario mining towns of Kearns and Manitouwadge.  Juris was active in sports and student government while at Manitouwadge High School but, like most immigrants at the time, academic studies were at the top of his priority list.  Juris next moved to "the big city" and completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Toronto.  He spent the next seven years in New York and Boston, completing a general surgery residence through Columbia University and a plastic surgery residency at Harvard University.  Armed with his Boards in General Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Juris had anticipated returning to Canada upon completing his residency but an offer to join the faculty at the University of California
